The importance of maintaining a secure backup for the sensitive data of your organization cannot be denied. If you are using a SQL Server database, there are several backup options that you can avail to safely store your office data on a cloud repository. Continue reading

Types of SQL Server Backups

Structured Query Language (SQL) is a special purpose programming language. SQL was specifically designed to manage the data that is contained inside the Relational Database Management System (RDBMS), and is also used for stream processing.

SQL backup can be quite tricky. For effective backup, you first have to know about the different types of SQL server backups.

Full Backup

When the term ‘full backup’ is used, it means that the backup holds the entire data either in a specific database or set of file groups or just files. Full backup also contains enough logs to permit the recovery of the data. Full backup is the foundation of both transaction log backup and differential backup.

Copy Only Backup

Copy only backup is also called the special use backup. It is entirely independent of the standard sequence of SQL Server backups.

File Backup

File backup means the backup of just one or more than one filegroups or just files.

Partial Backup

As the name suggests, it only holds data from a limited number of filegroups that exist in the database. This consists of data in the initial filegroups and all read or write filegroups. Partial backup also contains the optionally specified read only files.

Differential Backup

Differential backup is not independent by any means. In fact, it must be based on current full backup of the data. This means that the full backup should always be considered its base. This type of backup only holds data that has been modified since the differential base. Generally speaking, differential backups are faster and smaller to create than the foundation of the full backup. It also entails very less disk space for backing up the images. This means that using the differential backup can effectively save space that is available. This will also hasten the process frequent backups which will reduce the risk of data loss. During the restoration process differential backup is restored immediately after full backup, which is done first.

Transaction Log Backup

Transaction log backup is applied only to Full and Bulk Logged Recovery Models. Basically speaking, this type of backup is a serial record of all the transactions performed against the database since the duration of the backed up transaction log. The best thing about transaction log backup is that it allows you to recover the database to a certain specified time.
